Installation Six @ Scion Space

DGAF <3 Scion Space. They've consistently had pretty fresh, exciting shows featuring everything from video art, sound art, installations, graphic design, illustration, and posters from some of the dopest established and up-and-coming artists and designers. I've never been to a dull show here. Some of my past favorites have been a live VJ, and a giant 2-D piece by So-Me illuminated by a lightbox that reminded me of a modern-day stained glass window (displayed behind a curtain exactly how they display those fancy religious ones from churches in art museums).

We also <3 Scion Space because they HOOK IT UP! They provide free wine and Honest Ade and Honest Tea but there's always huge lines so I usually don't bother. I once scored a free bottle of Honest Tea though, I was so happy, I love that stuff! But whatever you do, always check the start time and MAKE SURE YOU COME EARLY. Believe me, you will be glad you did. If you come within 30 mins of it opening, you'll be sure to find street parking, skip a long stupid line, and best of all: get the coveted Scion gift bag!!!

Gift bags: get 'em while they're hot!

You automatically get one for free on a first come first serve basis, so it's definitely worth showing up before they run out. You get a cute bag with anything in it from CDs, magazines, flyers, earbuds, t-shirts, and even watches. DGAF had showed up "fashionably" late to previous Scion Space shows and realized we'd missed out on some goodies so we decided to step up our game this time and we scored.

Installation Six was a video exhibit that featured works from Dust La Rock, Eric Nakamura & Saelee Oh, French as Funeral Fog, Ill-Studio, Josh Graham, Mark Mothersbaugh, Monihan Monihan, PMKFA, and Sage Vaughn. They ranged from surreal to cute to humorous to dreamlike and everything in between. Each one had is own quirks, whether they be odd, charming, or both.

Sage Vaughn - "Self Help"

Dust La Rock - "Occult of Personality"

Who was DGAF winner of the night? Well, a lot of the little kids there were getting into the videos than most of the adults, of course. They were dancing and spazzing away to the projections, and trying to interact with them. But the award for most DGAF video hands down went to Monihan Monihan, who surprised us and made us laugh in "iChill". Obviously we couldn't capture it here, but it it was a series of short films, with each starting off in a tranquil outdoor setting. It would be completely silent and still for a few minutes until suddenly this crazy fuzz pedal effect music would come on, and out of nowhere someone with a big crazy Día de los Muertos looking mask would jump out and start attacking someone else already in the scene. We can't describe it here. You'd have to see it for yourself. But the results were beyond DGAF.

But DGAF winner of the night? We'd say Skeet Skeet, for not being too cool to be nice and talk to his fans, and for not being too cool to check out an art opening even though he was DJing that night at the Ricardo Montalbán Theater. It was going to be at a party put on by Converse and Paper magazine called "We Love Art", and judging from that name, we knew Skeet Skeet was by no means a hypocrite. He's the real deal.

Skeet Skeet!

Stay tuned for more DGAF Scion Space adventures at the Sixpack France show opening on Feb 20...
