Club UnderGAF

adorable bands edition

UPDATED 7/21

A while back, we took a DJing class and our teachers were these really cool cats who happen to run a weekly music event on Fridays at The Echo called Club Underground. CMYK made a trip out on Friday night and (despite getting in a bit late because SOMEONE (Shimosh) forgot their wallet at home) had a blast. The vibes are good, and the music is great. Sweater Girls won us over with their absolutely adorable indie pop sound.

DGAF Profile #7: Phra of Crookers

The "Crookers! Phra and Bot!" Edition

UPDATED 1-20-10

This profile should have been done last year. We talked about giving Phra a DGAF profile, but somehow it didn't happen. So we've awarded him the first DGAF profile of 2010. There's not a whole lot we know about Phra, who is one half of DGAF DJ duo favorites Crookers. But then, there's not much to say about him either, because we think these videos more than speak for themselves:

Save time and go to 1:10, 5:05, and 6:30...

He can cook like a chef, rocks a pink polo shirt like nobody's business, and started off as a hip hop DJ at 11 years old! It doesn't appear that he'll blow you off if you approach him, no matter how drunk and obnoxious you are (as witnessed at the Custom Hotel after Hard Summer in August 2009). If you've seen Crookers DJ, you'll have even more evidence that he's DGAF. But we're pretty sure you haven't heard him rap. Yes, rap. He can rock the decks AND mic with equal DGAF.

His Twitter name is also Phrappuccino. PHRAPPUCCINO. As you can see we're not making this up. You sure as hell won't find that at your local Starbucks. I think he should do a rap album, and maybe it could be called "phRAPpuccino".

But what kind of name is "Phra"? We assumed it was short for "Francesco", his real name, and spelled with a "ph" for fun (phun?). But on further investigation, we accidentally found out on Wikipedia that "Phra" was a Thai title of nobility and royalty! It was probably intentional, but even if it wasn't, that doesn't make him any less DGAF.

No wonder the upcoming Crookers album is going to be called "Tons of Friends". Who wouldn't want to be friends with someone that DGAF?

Armand Van Hell Yes!

12/18/2009 Control @ the Avalon in Hollywood: the one year anniversary crazy super party extravaganza with none other than THE Armand Van Helden. We tried to get in for free, but we didn't make it. We still got in for cheaper than the regular price of $25, but it definitely still would have been worth that. Shit, this is Armand Van Helden we're talking about here... bringing us another party like it's 1999.

James Monroe helped kick it off, and all we can say she is one badass DJ who knows how to get the crowd started. We'd definitely like to catch her again!

Now a sign of a good DJ is when their 2-hour set seemed more like 20 minutes, and they completely wear you out from dancing, only to drop a track that revives your energy for another half hour. A good DJ never lets up for a second, not even near the end when everyone's getting tired. Armand Van Helden accomplished all these with flying colors. He came out with a steady start, then continued to work his nonstop magic.

I was really, really happy when he dropped this track. Armand Van Helden rocked the party hard! Unfortunately, Shimosh couldn't bring in the camera, so there's no ridiculous pictures of our friends, but as always, Suzanarchist was being dumb, and Don was dancing with people who were fucked up on E. It's always fun to watch that.

There was a couple who were dancing together, if you can call it that. They were close to passed out over each other's shoulders, swaying back and forth, eyes closed, hair swinging everywhere. It would have been THAT funny if the couple still hadn't been doing the EXACT same thing literally over half an hour later. We are not exaggerating. If that couple is reading this now, thank you for contributing to an insanely funny night.

I was seriously starting to fade over halfway into the set, but when he played his 1999 classic "You Don't Know Me" I suddenly came back to life. That burst of energy burned me out though, and by the time we were approaching the end, I was feeling totally beat (no pun intended). Suddenly, he hits us with the BEST MIX OF "LET THE BASS KICK" I HAVE EVER HEARD, and I was once again resurrected from the dead. Armand Van Helden is a legend. Without a doubt one of the best DJ sets of the year.

So I guess we can go to Control if we can't have any...

ATN de Crecy?

control_breakbot_76
Justice and just Don

Since Discotheque went on hiatus, we've been getting our Friday night fixes at the Avalon lately. As we await its return, we continue to check out the consistently good guest DJs at Control and get up to our usual adventures in our electro playground. Something stupid always happens, and tonight was no exception. DGAF's very own Don managed to befriend a group of men who were convinced that he had E. He was nicnkamed "Don Patrol", while Shimosh was dubbed "Amy Patrol" when she was mistaken for Don's sister. It's times like these were you actually HOPE certain people ARE on drugs.

control_breakbot_76
Don won't slow your roll

I don't know what was funnier, Mr. Oizo being called Mr. Oye-zo or Etienne De Crecy being called "ATN" the whole night by both Mr. White and people from the crowd. Come on, peeps, that's just one letter off from an Automated Teller Machine.

control_breakbot_76
No control at Control

Etienne was a pretty solid DJ, and he kept the crowd going for over 2 hours (he still wasn't done when we left!). So mad props to him! Don't get me wrong, he's a great DJ, but his dynamics were pretty similar throughout and his drops got sort of predictable. But hey, if the formula works and keeps everyone dancing, there's absolutely nothing wrong with it. I just like to hear more twists and turns and standout tracks in the mix, but that's just me.

control_breakbot_76
A,T, and N... three capital letters

It would be DGAF if ATN was from the ATL.

PARTYGRRRLS, INC

Last month, we blogged about PartyGirls, Inc. with JD Samson.

Look at these fucking badasses!

On November 14th, 2009 the monthly PartyGirls was back at Señor Fish for Riot Grrrl Night. It was a night of 90s and Riot Grrrl awesomeness. Unfortunately, we got there too late for the bands, as we were at the Tribal Café. But we were there for the dancing and DJs.

DJ bringing it back to the 90s

Having fun!

Michaelvincent is soooo 90s

Our friend Michaelvincent always knows how to put on a good party! I don't know how long I've been waiting for a Riot Grrrl club night! Unfortunately, there didn't seem to be many other fellow Riot Grrrls, but whatever, I still danced my ass off to all the Bikini Kill tracks, and I think the funniest part of the night was when a mid-90's triple header came on: Veruca Salt's "Seether", Republica's "Ready to Go", and Lush's "Ladykillers", all in a row! I swear my adolescence was never THIS amusing! What made "Seether" even funnier was the fact that a girl came up between me and Amy , grabbed us, and started grinding us in a bizarre dance sandwich! LOL I had a chuckle when they played Suede's 1999 single "Can't Get Enough" (argh I hate how they had to be called The London Suede here in the US), and I was really delighted to hear Chromeo. Fun, eclectic, and I have a question for those kids who apparently requested electro: You're at a Riot Grrrl night, what did you really expect to hear?

Unlike a lot of other clubs, they even have affordable GOOD food: they serve tacos in the outside patio for $1.50, they're freshly made and it's the REAL shit... and yes, they have chorizo, al pastor, and lengua! To me, a place is for real if they have more than just chicken and carne asada. The only criticism I have is that there doesn't seem to be anything veggie friendly at the moment.

It's on every second Saturday night of the month, so do yourself a favor and check it out:

DGAF Returns to Discotheque with CHROMEO!!!

We weren't so DGAF that we'd dare to miss Chromeo's DJ set at Discotheque on Oct 9!!! And we're glad we didn't! The place was rightfully packed, and Dave 1 and P-Thugg didn't let us down. They dropped some of their own new tracks, and seeing them DJ made me want to see their live set even more!

Dave 1 throwin' it down

P-Thugg still rocked the talkbox like nobody's business, it was mind-boggling and most of the time I didn't even realize it was him, I swore it was part of the track! When they dropped one of my personal 2009 favorites "Let the Bass Kick," I was so confused when Shimosh pointed out that P-Thugg was talkboxing a melody along with it! He did that for most of the set. That takes some serious skillz! We were surrounded by even more wasted and obnoxious people than at previous nights. Chromeo ending it with Bone Thugs' "Crossroads" was a surreal mix of sentiment, '90s nostalgia, exhaustion from dancing, and good times.

Who won DGAF that night?

Well, our DGAF Winner from the Don Rimini Discotheque night made a reappearance... and still managed to outdance everyone until everyone decided to jam pack the floor in time for Chromeo, while by that time absolutely shitfaced drunk or rolling balls.

Our July DGAF Winner

But... it was obvious that tonight's winner, hands down, was P-Thugg, or PEE-THUGG, as he signed on our friend Emely's poster. Anyone who can integrate a talkbox into a DJ set so smoothly and effectively and effortlessly deserves one of the highest DGAF honors.

(Special thanks to Bjones)

And a special shout-out to Paul Devro, who dropped some mad decent (pardon the pun) beats afterwards!

See you on NYE at Club Nokia with PB Wolf, Chromeo??? I'm totally down! To be continued...

JD(GAF) SAMSON

We managed to catch JD Samson DJ at Partygirls, Inc. on September 12th. For those of you who don't know, Partygirls, Inc. is a dance party put on by our friend Michaelvincent at Señor Fish in downtown LA every second Saturday of the month. It's got a good vibe and you'll have a blast! Check out their Facebook page for more info:

OIZO CONTROL

A couple months ago, I posted a DGAF profile on mr. oizo and CMYK finally got a chance to see him spin live in Hollywood. It was further proof that he deserved that profile. In fact, he's so DGAF i'm posting about him again.

So on Friday, 10/16/2009, Suz, Don & I went out to see Mr. Oizo spin at Control (at Avalon).

taken from Control Friday's myspace

When we got into the club, the doors to the main floor was closed, so everyone was hanging around the bar. I got myself a water, and Suz got herself an Incredible Hulk (Hennessy + Hypnotiq). The doors opened and Deth Hertz played a pretty solid set. Then Mr. White went on at 12 and played bon jovi's "you give love a bad name" into lmfao's "shots." it was probably the funniest mashup i've heard in a while (Shot through the heart and you're the blame! shot through the heart! shot shot shot shot shot shot EVERYBOOODY SHOTS SHOTS SHOTS SHOTS SHOTS SHOTS EVERYBOOOOODY! = WTF?). I was literally on the floor laughing.

CONTROL_OIZO_34
Don does not approve of LMFAO

Then, finally, the beardy Frenchman himself, Quentin Dupieux, aka Mr. Oizo took over the decks with an amazing DJ set that made my mind melt with goodness.

CONTROL_OIZO_52
Mr. Oizo is cooler than you.

Fans gathered around him as he was walking towards the backstage area, including myself. But my intention was not to tell him he was the best DJ/director ever (although that was part of it), but to do the Chivers handshake with him. I stopped him and said "CHIVERS!" (not sure if he heard this) and did the motion to the first part of the handshake. He smiled and did the handshake with me. Needless to say, that made my night.

in case you didn't read the other post and don't know what a Chivers handshake is

So anyway, when Mr. Oizo goes up, the audience goes apeshit. He starts djing with CDJs WHILE smoking AND drinking champagne (straight from the fucking bottle!). And of course, he played Flat Beat! <3 It was amazing to hear him play that. The best part is, when he plays a CD, he takes it out, breaks it, and throws it into the audience. DGAF enough for me? you better believe it.

CONTROL_OIZO_04
Don, Suz & the Nabil Linus ready to melt their faces off to Mr. Oizo

Also, at some point in the night, he sprayed the audience with his white foam champagne. There were a few people who brought their Steak DVDs to get him to sign it. People passed it up to photographers on stage who put it up on the table for him, and he signed it for them. DGAF, yet still nice enough to sign autographs during his DJ set. What a guy. What a beard! And one of the guys from Club Soda had a CHIVERS jacket!

CONTROL_OIZO_12
It's bootleg, but it's still rad

The point is, if you ever get a chance to see Mr. Oizo, do it. Because it'll blow your brains.

DGAF Profile #1: KAVINSKY

"drink all your vodka and stop traffic in hollywood" edition

Coke? —taken from meowza's flickr

This guy is the epitome of DGAF.
French DJ Kavinsky (signed on Fool's Gold) does not give a FUCK. Only he can ride around in a Testarossa, drink all of Busy P's vodka, get a bouncer from Cinespace in a headlock, then get caught in a headlock himself, stop traffic outside of Cinespace at 2 in the morning and wear shirts that say "Coke" on it and get away with it. There are many types of DGAF in this world, and Kavinsky is the badass type of DGAF.

Look at what this guy is wearing, is there any question as to how DGAF he is?—photo from SHIMOSH's flickr

This man DJ's around the world, driving around in a red Testarossa. He even made a song based on his Testarossa. In fact, he created an entire backstory to his music and became the character of his music. Can you do that if you gave a fuck? I highly doubt it.

Kavinsky supposedly died in 1986 in a car crash in his Testarossa. He came back to life as a zombie and now drives the streets with the Testarossa. In 1986, that fool was 11. He died while driving a car at 11. DGAF indeed.

The shirts he wears is just extra proof about how DGAF he is. Coke? You know he does a lot of it. And I'm not talking Coca-Cola, either. How else do you come up with shit like dying in 1986 while driving a Testarossa? And he sports that on a shirt for the world to know, because he just DGAF.

He not only makes crazy music and even crazier characters, but he acts in his friend Quentin Dupiex (Mr. Oizo)'s videos and films. Even the characters he plays are DGAF.

Does he give a fuck that he's throwing some kind of square softball and acting in the most nonsensical film of this century? No. No he does not.

The only video interview I know of that exists of this man is also incredibly ridiculous:

Superpowers: "Just a big dick." Do I need to go any further? I think I've proved my case.
